Nursing at Centra
The helicopter lands on the tarmac and within seconds you are saving a life.
You swaddle the new baby and smile at the new mother as you lay her baby in her arms.
You connect with the family of a teenager in the neurological intensive care unit and explain in simple terms the medical care that's giving him a chance to heal.
After your patient's hip replacement, you work in tandem on her rehabilitation and watch as she grows stronger and more confident.
As a nurse navigator, you guide patients through their cancer journey from talking them through the process to coordinating their treatment, explaining state-of-the-art technology and being there for them during their specialized rehabilitation.
These are just a few examples of care provided by nurses at Centra, a regional healthcare system that is continuously ranked nationally for quality care excellence. Centra's Lynchburg hospitals have consistently earned the nation's highest honor for nursing care, Magnet status, from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet signifies national excellence in leadership, empowerment, professional practice, innovation and evidence-based outcomes.
As patients from an ever–growing geography turn to Centra for its nationally award-winning care, nursing opportunities continue to expand from the number of positions to the types of nursing care offered in our broad range of facilities throughout central and southside Virginia.
At Centra, the difference is in the way we care... for our patients and colleagues.
What Centra's Closed Staffing Policy Means to the Patient
Ten years ago, Centra's hospitals proudly made the move to go to closed staffing — a choice that still has many long-time nurses and managers within the Centra organizing raving about the results. Closed Staffing means that nurses are never pulled or reassigned to other units; placing the right nurse in the right place at the right time.
Feel free to watch this ten minute video where Centra nurses actually discuss the changes Closed Staffing has made within Centra's Hospitals and how this change has positively affected all Centra patients.
2011 Centra Nursing Annual Report
What words would you use to describe a nurse? Excellence, professionalism and dedication come to mind. These are just a few of the qualities that nurses exhibit each day at Centra. And we know that the quality of nursing care is a primary reason people give for choosing their hospital. Centra nurses consistently earn patient satisfaction scores that rank in the top quartile in the nation. Considering there are 6,000 hospitals in the United States, that is quite an achievement. They do this by respecting the needs of each patient and family and working hard to meet our mission of Excellent Care…Every Time.
Our nurses also have earned Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the nation’s highest nursing honor, which places them in an elite group. Fewer than five percent of all hospitals in the nation have earned this designation. This experience, dedication, and commitment to excellence is why Centra is our region’s number one choice for healthcare.
